First WordsG, H and home-row words

Home-row words are real English words spelled only with the letters A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K and L — for example "ask", "glad", "flash" and "salad". G and H are reached by stretching the index fingers inward from F and J, which completes the home row and makes real words possible.

About this level

Your pointer fingers learn one more move each — a small reach inward to G and H — and then the letters start making real words. Dad. Glass. Flash. Salad. Everything here is typed without your hands leaving the home row.

What you practise here

  • Reach for G and H — Stretch your pointer fingers sideways — F reaches to G, J reaches to H. Then straight back home. Target: 13 words per minute at 90% accuracy.
  • Tiny words — Read the whole word first, then type it in one flow. Target: 16 words per minute at 93% accuracy.
  • Longer words — Do not spell it out letter by letter — let your hand type the shape. Target: 18 words per minute at 94% accuracy.
  • Word sprint — One minute. How many words can you land cleanly? Target: 20 words per minute at 93% accuracy, over 60 seconds.
  • First words champion — You are about to leave the home row. Show it who is boss first. Target: 20 words per minute at 95% accuracy.

How this level is scored

Every lesson awards up to three stars. One star is for finishing, two for finishing accurately, and three for accuracy at the level's pace — speed on its own never earns a star. Lessons in this level also wait for the correct key: a wrong press does not move the cursor on, so a child cannot practise the wrong finger movement. Words per minute is recorded but never shown to the child — it appears only on the parent and progress pages.
